Casey, a 22-year-old Dallas native, finds stability, support, and a renewed sense of purpose after moving into the Dallas Hope Center. No longer burdened by the struggles of an unstable home life, she now envisions a future filled with opportunity. With a newfound sense of independence, she’s working toward her career goals and embracing the life she once thought was out of reach.

A Challenging Past

Growing up as the eldest of three siblings, Casey often felt more like a second parent than a sister. The responsibility weighed heavily on her shoulders as she managed household chores and cared for her younger siblings, often at her own expense.

Casey shares, “As the oldest, I was expected to do a lot. I did everyone’s chores and felt like a second mom, not a sister. My brother and sister used to get home before me, and when I got home a couple of hours later, I had to make sure to cook them something before I made myself something to eat.”

As the oldest, I was expected to do a lot. I did everyone’s chores and felt like a second mom, not a sister.

Yet, despite her efforts, home never felt like a place of comfort. Verbal abuse from her mother created an environment of fear and isolation.

She recalls, “There was a lot of verbal abuse that I just didn’t understand. I already had to deal with bullies at school, and then I had to deal with one inside of my home, too.”

At sixteen, an altercation with her mother turned dangerous. After being placed in a headlock during an argument, she managed to escape. That night, she made the painful decision to run away.

With no stable place to go, Casey spent years navigating temporary living situations. She moved in with her cousin but faced challenges there, too. When her cousin began restricting her access to leftover food and asked for more money than she could pay for bills, Casey realized she needed to leave. Searching for a way out, she discovered Dallas Hope Charities Housing Program and took a leap of faith in applying.

Finding Refuge at the Dallas Hope Center

Walking through the doors of the Hope Center for the first time was a surreal experience for Casey. The warm, welcoming space felt different from any place she had lived before. Unlike past living situations, the Hope Center was bright, safe, and comforting—a true home.

For Casey, “It doesn’t feel like a housing situation. It just feels normal and relaxed.

She bonded with her new housemates, finding friendship and understanding among them. The resources available at the Hope Center also provided critical support. With access to food, transportation assistance, and job resources, she began to rebuild her life.

This organization helped me to not be homeless, and I’m really grateful for that.

In her first month as a resident, Casey landed a job as a manager at a retail store, an important step in her journey toward self-sufficiency. She shares, “I definitely want my own place. I want to eventually have a comfortable life so my brother and sister can come live with me if they want to.”

She’s also pursuing her passion for beauty and hopes to enroll in cosmetology school. With a goal of completing the program in seven months, she dreams of a career in hairstyling and nail artistry.

When asked why she wants to pursue beauty, she shares, “I like doing nails. I love the colors, and it allows me to be very creative.”

A Future Full of Promise

For Casey, the Dallas Hope Center is more than just a place to stay—it’s a foundation for a brighter future. The security, acceptance, and support she has found have given her the confidence to chase her dreams. She’s saving money, gaining work experience, and setting her sights on long-term success.

With each step forward, Casey is proving to herself that she can achieve the stability and happiness she once thought impossible.

Casey says “It feels like I have a second chance and the opportunity to accomplish my goals. I’m aware that I’m lucky because, with the economy right now, other housing is full, and it’s really bad out there. This organization helped me to not be homeless, and I’m really grateful for that.
