Powering Hope

For a Sustainable Future

On September 4, 2024, Dallas Hope Charities and Green Mountain Energy Sun Club officially launched the “Powering Hope” sustainability project, made possible by a $121,000 grant from Green Mountain Energy Sun Club. The funds from this were used to purchase a rooftop solar array and battery storage for the Dallas Hope Center as well as a 2025 Subaru Solterra EV to help keep DHC staff and residents moving. This transformative initiative is designed to enhance the energy efficiency and sustainability of the Dallas Hope Center, ensuring a brighter, greener future for the LGBTQIA+ community we serve.

“This grant is a game-changer…It empowers us to integrate sustainability into our everyday operations, reducing our environmental impact while enhancing the support we provide to our residents.”

These technologies help DHC reduce our carbon footprint with renewable solar energy and zero-emission transportation. Savings on electricity bills from the solar array allow us to redirect funds directly into programs for LGBTQ+ youth. On-site battery storage keeps our lights on during outages, providing security to our residents. Whether it is hauling supplies to Pride events or transporting residents to critical job interviews and mental health appointments, our EV ensures that dignity and sustainability go hand-in-hand.

Flipping the Switch

On May 21st, 2025, Dallas Hope Charities (DHC) and Green Mountain Energy Sun Club came together to officially “Flip the Switch” on a series of sustainability enhancements that will help the Dallas Hope Center transition toward net-zero energy use. This milestone marked the installation of our 17.01 kW solar array and 10kW battery storage system. By generating our own clean energy, the Hope Center is now projecting to prevent over 20,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually. This is the equivalent of not driving 26,187 miles or recycling 113,477 plastic bottles.

The sustainability enhancements are estimated to save the organization more than $12,000 annually, allowing the organization to redirect savings toward its core mission of providing food, shelter, and services that instill dignity, stability, and hope.

Fueling Change

Powering Hope goes beyond helping DHC and our residents to reduce our costs and ecological impact. We’re using the cost and time savings to provide more assistance to those in need. These programs are all part of our holistic approach to a sustainable community.

Love the Block

Giving Back to the Neighborhood

Sustainability isn’t just about energy; it’s about taking care of the spaces we share. In partnership with the City of Dallas “Love Your Block” initiative and the UTD Terry Scholars, we took our mission to the streets.

31 volunteers donated over $4,300 worth of service hours to clean up the neighborhood surrounding the Hope Center. Our CEO, Tamika Perry, believes that because the community pours so much love into our residents, this is our opportunity to pour love back into the community.

Cultivating Spaces

Gardening with DLR Group

In collaboration with the DLR Group, we have revitalized the Hope Center’s outdoor spaces to focus on food security and mental wellness.

This gardening initiative works in tandem with our new solar infrastructure to create a holistic “living lab” for sustainability. By harvesting rainwater and growing our own food, we are teaching our residents valuable skills while fostering a peaceful environment for healing and growth.
