Many LGBTQ+ youth face family rejection and are forced to leave their home, which leaves them disproportionately at risk of homelessness — as well as aging out of foster care with no place to go. Dallas lacks the appropriate services dedicated to these homeless youth due to an inconsistent ability to safely serve the LGBTQ+ community.
The situations these youth experience can lead to immense hopelessness and increases their risk of suicide, which is why Dallas Hope Center focuses on the needs of LGBTQ+ youth who require transitional living. With issues of safety and homophobia in existing shelters, what they face is more acute than the overall homeless population.
Since 2018, Dallas Hope Charities’ mission has been to reduce homelessness among young adults in North Texas with our LGBTQ-focused shelter in the Dallas area, tailored to the needs of individuals ages 18-24.
Dallas Hope Center’s transitional living program is dual functioning: as stabilization (typically called emergency) and then to transitional living. As youth are stabilized out of their traumatic situation, they begin working to achieve goals they are proud to accomplish.
We provide these celebrated youth a safe, connected, and welcoming space. They have the freedom to be authentic and honest, in an environment that encourages growth. In providing our youth document assistance, cell phones, groceries and bus passes, they have the ability to focus on gaining healthy independence through securing income, saving money and planning for the future. Residents are also provided life skills education including grocery shopping, meal planning, savings account guidance and financial wellness.

Riley Gale Library opened at the end of 2020 to honor Riley Gale, the late metal frontman from Power Trip.
Dallas Hope Charities was an important organization to Riley and donated a portion of ticket proceeds to the organization as well as advocated for our mission to help LGBT youth. He shared his love of reading with many of his friends, which is what led to the development of the Riley Gale Library.
The Riley Gale Library is meant to be a place that each resident can go to access a variety of books, request books they are interested in that we will provide, and socialize with one another

With over seven years of experience as a civil engineer, Hector Pietro designs roadways, pedestrian and bike facilities, and stormwater systems that support safety, economic development, and sustainability in the community. In 2024, he was selected to join the Communities Foundation of Texas’s Emerging Leaders in Philanthropy Cohort, which inspired him to pursue a deeper impact in the Dallas–Fort Worth area. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, Hector felt compelled to join an organization dedicated to providing food, shelter, and affirming services to LGBTQIA+ youth experiencing homelessness. The mission of Dallas Hope Charities—instilling dignity, stability, and hope—immediately resonated, and he knew he had to be part of it.
Impact and Passion
Hector is excited to serve on the Dallas Hope Charities Board of Directors alongside a group of passionate leaders with deep experience expanding the organization’s reach to LGBTQIA+ youth. He thrives in spaces filled with accomplished, driven individuals and was drawn to the board after reviewing data on DHC’s community impact. He firmly believes that loving those in need while they are learning to love themselves is one of the most powerful ways to strengthen a community.
Fun and Personal Touch
Hector taught himself to decorate sugar cookies using royal icing by watching TikTok videos—and has since become quite skilled, considering each one a miniature, edible work of art.
Favorite Quote: “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.” – Winston Churchill
He hopes to see the Hope Center’s capacity expand and believes that can happen by increasing community awareness about the urgent need for DHC’s services—ultimately inspiring more donors and volunteers to take action. Grateful for the opportunity to serve, Hector is motivated to help drive that growth.
